Throughout my journey, I have discovered that some of the most challenging moments in my life arise when God nudges me out of my comfort zone, compelling me to take a leap of faith. During these times, my mind is often flooded with various questions and concerns. I find myself battling discouragement, grappling with self-doubt, and struggling to muster the confidence needed to fulfill God's will for my life. I have a nagging curiosity: what is it about me that God would choose to entrust me with such significant tasks? Have any of you ever experienced this feeling? I call these periods "scared seasons" when I repeatedly wrestle with the daunting question, "What if I fail?" Yet, in those moments of uncertainty, God answers me profoundly with another question: "What if you don’t?"
It’s interesting how, at times, we can inadvertently sabotage ourselves from receiving God's promises simply due to fear. Fear is a formidable enemy—a dream killer that can paralyze us, preventing us from embracing God’s intended path. It creates a distorted lens through which we view reality, closing our eyes to the vast capabilities of God. Often, our fears are rooted in imaginary scenarios of what could happen rather than what is. The Lord spoke to Paul, saying, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” In turn, Paul expressed, "I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). This illustrates how our perceived weaknesses can become the very platforms through which God’s strength is revealed.
Many of us are familiar with the verse from Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." While this scripture is frequently cited to combat fear or the fear of failure, I wonder if we sometimes misplace our reliance. Perhaps the error lies in depending solely on our strength, amplifying our worries.
Years ago, I found myself on an exhilarating yet daunting journey when I published my first book. I became an author! Despite the joy of this accomplishment, I was plagued by fear; I questioned whether God had given me the gift of writing and whether I would let Him down by failing to execute His plan. In my apprehension, I tried desperately to ignore the calling, but God persistently called me forward until retreating became impossible.
Initially, I leaned on my strength and confidence in my abilities, striving for greatness to fulfill His will. Yet, I reached a pivotal point where I surrendered to God’s guidance, and suddenly, fear ceased to be the driving force in my life. It would be liberating to adopt this mindset in every aspect of our lives! I found my bravery soaring as I leaped out of a plane, but I often hesitated when faced with uncomfortable life situations.
Ultimately, we must approach our challenges with the same courage David exhibited in confronting Goliath. The daunting giant, Goliath, represented the might of the world, yet a young shepherd boy vanquished him. This iconic story serves as a testament that God can use anyone as His instrument, regardless of their perceived power or stature. Moreover, David's victory illustrates that every small obstacle we conquer prepares us for the more significant battles ahead. Therefore, let us walk forward with courage and boldness, knowing that God is with us, no matter where we find ourselves or how insurmountable our circumstances may appear.
